This policy explains the privacy practices of the OtterCompass website and the OtterCompass iOS app, a Streetmodo LLC product. The app is in development; this policy describes the implemented V1 features ahead of public release.
The current website
You can read this website without creating an account or providing an email address. The website introduces OtterCompass and provides privacy and support information; the site also hosts the public content files used to deliver destination reports and the Streetmodo app catalog.
- We do not intentionally collect information about your LGBTQ+ identity, sexual orientation, or gender identity through this website.
- The website does not currently require or offer user accounts.
- We do not currently collect email addresses through this website, and there is no mailing-list signup.
- We do not intentionally use advertising trackers or marketing pixels, and we do not currently perform behavioral profiling.
Cookies and analytics
The website code we publish does not set cookies, use browser storage, or include analytics, advertising scripts, or third-party embedded content. The pages use locally hosted images and a stylesheet.
Technical information and hosting
Our hosting provider, Bluehost, may process normal technical and server information to deliver, secure, and maintain the website. This may include an IP address, browser or device information, requested pages, request times, and server or security logs.
This technical processing supports website operation, security, and reliability.
Support and external links
This website links to Streetmodo and its support and privacy pages. If you choose to contact Streetmodo through its support site, information you provide is handled through that service. Please review Streetmodo’s broader privacy policy for more information. Other websites may have different privacy practices.
The OtterCompass iOS app
The app lets you search a destination index on your device, read sourced destination reports, and save places for future reference. It does not require an account, email address, or LGBTQ+ identity profile. It has no advertising, behavioral analytics, marketing trackers, or third-party analytics SDKs. We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising.
The app does not request access to your location, contacts, camera, microphone, or notifications. Search text stays on your device and is not sent to the content server.
Local storage and deletion
Saved destinations and downloaded reports are stored in the app’s protected local storage on your device, excluded from iCloud backup, and are not synced to a cloud account. Recently viewed destinations are held only for the current app session. The app covers its content when inactive to reduce exposure in the app switcher.
You can remove individual saved places from their reports. In About, “Clear saved places & downloaded data” removes your saved list, recent places, and cached updates. Reports bundled with the app remain available. Deleting the app also removes its local data.
Content downloads
The app requests public JSON content from ottercompass.com to check for current destination reports and updates to the Streetmodo app catalog. These connections necessarily reveal ordinary technical information such as your IP address, request time, and the requested file URL to our hosting provider. A requested report URL identifies the destination being downloaded, but the app does not send your search text, saved-place list, identity information, advertising identifier, or precise location.
Hosting and security logs may retain technical request information as described above. This processing is for delivery, reliability, and security, not behavioral advertising. Clearing the app’s local data does not delete hosting-provider logs. For questions about those records, contact Streetmodo through Support.
Links to other services
Source links open a browser view. Instagram links open only when you choose to follow them; no Instagram feed or tracking code is embedded in the app. The Streetmodo app catalog is delivered from ottercompass.com; choosing an App Store link contacts Apple. These external services, including Instagram, Apple, and support providers, operate under their own privacy policies.
